OpenAI's New Leadership. Who's In, Who's Out?

AI company OpenAI is undergoing a leadership transformation, unveiling a new board led by Bret Taylor in the role of Chairman.

The renewed leadership aims to bring diverse perspectives to the forefront, ensuring effective governance and oversight for the future endeavors of OpenAI.

Who's New?

Larry Summers, the President Emeritus at Harvard University, and Adam D'Angelo, renowned as the co-founder and CEO of Quora, step in as independent directors.

Summers brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Secretary of the Treasury and Director of the National Economic Council in previous administrations.

D'Angelo's notable ventures include early investments in Instagram and his role in founding AI startup Poe.

CEO Sam Altman remains at the helm, with immediate priorities revolving around advancing research, bolstering safety measures, and refining customer-centric products.

According to Altman, the emphasis is on creating a diverse board for enhanced governance and independent reviews, with a continuous commitment to secure AI systems.

Other Changes

Mira Murati, returning as CTO, previously took the reins as interim CEO during Altman's absence.

Her efforts included advocating for the re-hiring of Altman and Brockman after their ousting from OpenAI.

Ilya Sutskever, however, will be stepping down from the board, marking a significant change in the leadership landscape.

This is after Sutskever posted on the X his regret for participating in the board.
